Leadership Centre County Youth Program Cross Country 5K: April 12, 2003
by Marty Mazur
Could winter finally be over? After a few 70 degree days, each one followed
by a return of winter (including a school cancellation day on April 7!),
the sun shone warm and bright on the small crowd of runners who gathered
at the State College High School Cross Country Course for the Leadership
Centre County Youth Program 5K. The organizers were a group of high schoolers
headed by Meghan Mason, a State
High cross country and track star. Meghan's crew had rounded up large numbers
of sponsors and prizes, cajoled the State High grounds crew into painting
the course lines (in the off season!), finagled the use of the school's timing
equipment, and organized an army of volunteers to help guide runners on the
complex course. The only thing remaining was to get as many runners as possible.
Maybe there was too much yard work to do on the first nice weekend of Spring.
Whatever kept 'em away, they missed a great run! The young people who
organized the race got enough sponsorship that, after costs and despite the low turnout, they raised over $300 for Centre Volunteers in Medicine.
John Niederhaus
tore up the course, finishing first in 17:23. Erik Werner was second in 18:11,
and Joshua Corbin was third in 18:41. This trio was followed by the still speedy
over-the-hill gang of Scott Roycroft, Terry Reid, and Boyd Brumbaugh. Katie
Kisenwether, another State High harrier, took first among the females in
23:49. Regan Takac was second in 26:16, and Michelle Lenox was third in 27:40.
A couple of sub-high schoolers competed and ran very well. Sarah Geselowitz,
9, turned it on up the final hill to crush her Dad.
And Ashley DeRosa, 13, sped up and finished strong after she finally took
her sweatshirt off. And Jim Vogelsong (who finished high school before all
the other runners were born!) turned in yet another blistering run!
