26th Annual Frostbite 5-Miler and 5K Walk,  Duboistown, PA December 10, 2006

On Sunday, December 10, 2006, 180 runners and walkers arrived at the Duboistown Fire Hall in Duboistown Pennsylvania to compete in this years 5 Mile Run and 5K Walk events. With tempetures in the low 40's, sunny skies and the largest field assembled that anyone could remember during the past 15 years the stage was set for an outstanding event. This was great news as all money raised at this event is donated to the Lycoming County Special Olympics. After some brief pre race comments, including water stops being located approxamitly at the 1.86325 and 3.7568 Mile marks (chuckle, chuckle), the horn sounded and the participants were off.

While everyone was off at the sound of the fire siren, a group of runners vied for the early lead. However it didn't take long to see that Garth Watson, Canton's 17 year old outstanding high school junior, and 22 year old Jadrien Deibler from Syndertown were going to have an outstanding battle. Moving through the early miles in 5:15 pace they soon outdistanced themselves from the rest of the field. By the time they crossed the finish line Watson and Deibler had run some of the fastest times recorded in the past 12 years. Watson finished in 1st place with a time of 26:37 (5:18 pace) with Deibler a mere :13 seconds back finishing in a time of 26:50 (5:20 pace). In addition to there outstanding times, 52 year old Tom Cali from State College finished in 3rd place with an time of 28:39 (5:43 pace).

In the womens race 18 year old Tamara Pavlov form Lewisburg and Melian Boyle from Montoursville staged there own battle as the difference in there finishing times was only :06 seconds: Pavlov 33:55 to Boyles time of 34:01. Considering the course contained one challenging short hill climb and a 1.1 mile gradual climb there pace of 6:48 was outstanding. Charm Breon finished third with a time of 34:55.

The nice weather and large field carried the excitement over to the walkers in the 5K Walkas well as James Hooper and Dave Michael both were under 10:30 pace with Hooper recording a time of 31:34 to Michael 's 32:39. Female winner Ann Furdock recorded a time of 35:37 with Kay Deitrick finishing 2nd in a time of 38:03.

Many participants could be heard telling their friends that they had a great race and had run one of their best races of the year. This was nice to hear as this is the last race of the year for many of the participants. Race Director Lester Loner, an avid runner himself for over 22 years, assured them that the course distances were accurate as he had wheeled measured the course himself on three seperate occassions. While many participants turned in outstanding performances one of the best had to be
the 33:06 time recorded by 12 year old Clay Stoner from Montoursville.

At the conclusion of the races 61 awards were presented to the overall and division winners. While everyone seemed happy with the trophies and medals they received the Bears wearing medals presented to the first three overall women finishers, the savings bonds presented to the youngest male and female finishers and the bottle of wine given to the oldest finisher seemed to draw the loudest  applause.

Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves during the awards presentation as door prizes of jewelry, jackets, gift certificates and sweepers were handed out to some of the lucky participants. In addition, all in attendance were treated to post race refreshments of fruit, beverages, donuts, bagels and home made bean soup donated by Brenda Hooper. Although everyone had a great time the true beneficiaries of this event was the Special Olympics as over $ 4,100.00 was raised for them at this years event. Many people were heard expressing their support but one of the participants expressed it the best when she said "The best part of the day was to see haow everyone applauded that special athlete and how much he seemed to enjoy it. Puts everything in perspective, especially at this time of the year. Certainly made my day". The atmosphere before, during and after this event was outstanding and if you did not participate this year we suggest that you add this race to your schedule for December 2007.
