The Penn State Triathlon Club held the Lactic Acid 5K on Sunday, November 5, in the Penn State land behind the Ag Arena. This race was revived a few years ago, and this year it took off, nearly doubling the number of registrants from the last two years. Despite the blustery conditions (low 40s and windy again, like last year), a crowd of over 100 runners took part in the race. The crowd was largely college-age runners, but a couple of squads from the Old Fartleks team, and a few other seasoned striders, made their presence known.
The course is new this year. The old course had to be abandoned because construction on the bypass flooded the tunnel under that road, making it a muddy, impassable mess. The new course is just about as challenging as the old: somewhat hilly and all run on gravel or asphalt university roads.
The overall best time was turned in by Gregg Davis (16:01). Gregg is affiliated with the Penn State cross-country team, and could not accept a prize. The best non-collegiate time was turned in by Rob Chandler, who finished in 17:06. The best woman's time was turned in by Britt Graham, who finished in 21:10. A large contingent of team runners turned out for the race. The Tri-Club fielded the fastest team, but being gracious hosts, they declined to accept a first place prize. That went to the Old Fartlek's A-Team, who took the honor for the third straight year. The two Old Fartlek squads picked up numerous age group awards, as well. Finishing second, close behind the Old Fartleks (a dangerous place to be), was the team "MEC-1". The Old Fartleks B-Team was third. Other teams were "1202 & Crew", Kinesiology, and AFROTC.
As usual, the Tri-Club were great hosts. I just wish they could do something about the weather! The awards this year were hand painted glass plates and bowls. There were numerous door prizes as well. The Tri-Club does a great job with this race. I hope it keeps growing!
