Running Routes in State College

compiled by Marty Mazur

This page contains descriptions of some of the club members' favorite running routes. Marty Mazur has DeLorme 3-D Topo Quads 2.0, a topographic mapping program, that he loves to play with whenever he has time. He'll be adding routes every now and then. We're starting to get quite a few routes compiled here, but most of them are the lunchtime favorites of the Rec Hall Regulars. If you'd like to add a route, contact Marty. If you'd like to try your hand at making your own running route maps, go to the Running Route Mapping Tools page for more information.

The new topo-map pages that Marty is developing have the following format: A Route name is given, followed by its Mileage. The section called Hillage gives a description of how hilly the course is in terms of total elevation change and average percentage grade. The percentage grade is the rise over the run expressed as a percentage. The average is an "absolute value" average, so that closed-loop courses won't have a zero average grade. Information about elevation change of the individual steep hills on the route is given. In the Description section there are directions for running the course. The Remarks section gives some of Marty's own remarks on the course. All of this verbage is followed by a color topographic map and an elevation profile for the course.

As always, exercise caution and good sense when running these routes. With the continuing construction on campus and in town, detours will need to be taken from time to time. Safety First!
